Direct Mail
Direct Mail (also known as Junk Mail or Advertising Mail), is the delivery of letters using the mail service directly to your letterbox. Direct Mail is hugely important to companies with the average UK person receiving on average one piece of Direct Mail each day and it accounting for the majority of the mail handled by the Royal Mail. According to the DMA, UK consumers generate over £25 billion worth of sales from Direct Mail every year so it is fair to say that most people appreciate the information and special offers they receive by post.

Direct Marketing allows marketers to target their campaigns carefully so that only selected individuals will receive a copy of the mailing. It also allows them to customise the mailing so that the mailing can be tailored to their needs based on previous transactions or other information. On the downside however, Direct Mail can be seen by some consumers as an environmental waste and can alienate some recipients against the company sending the material.
There are 3 main ways in which you can control the amount of Direct Mail that you receive:
-
Register with OptOutLive. Our free OptOutLive service will let you choose which companies you do not want to receive mail from. We will inform these companies for you and they will then be obliged to do so by law.
-
Register with the MPS. The Mailing Preference Service will stop up to 95% of all unsolicited addressed mail to your letterbox. This service is not law but it will stop all Direct Mail from responsible marketers.
-
Write to the company yourself. If you are still getting unwanted Direct Mail after trying the other possible solutions you can write to the company yourself using our template. This template is fully backed up by UK law and requires the company to stop mailing you.
